Tour de France: a legendary cycling competition

The Tour de France is one of the most prestigious and famous cycling races in the world. This year, it will pass near several of our Siblu campsites in France from Saturday, June 29 to Sunday, July 21, 2024, so if you want to witness the super cyclists whizzing past or even do some cycling of your own, then we'll let you know where to be!

History of the Tour

This event, held annually in France, has a rich and fascinating history that spans over a century. The Tour de France was created in 1903 by journalist Henri Desgrange, with the aim of increasing the circulation of the newspaper L'Auto, where he was the editor-in-chief. The first edition of the Tour de France began on July 1, 1903, with 60 riders ready to take on the challenge. The participants had to cover approximately 2,428 kilometers in six stages, connecting Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux, Paris, Marseille, Paris, and finally Bordeaux. The winner of this first edition was Maurice Garin.

Despite the controversies of the 1990s and 2000s, particularly around doping, the Tour de France has remained a major sporting event, attracting millions of spectators along the roads of France and viewers from around the world. It has also expanded its influence by organizing starts abroad and encouraging the participation of international riders.

The yellow jersey, or "the leader's jersey," is the most iconic symbol of the Tour de France. The rider with the lowest overall time after each stage wears this jersey. It is a highly coveted honor, and the battle for the yellow jersey is often intense.
 

The 2024 Stages

Since its inception, the Tour de France has evolved and transformed into a major global sporting event. The route changes every year, but the format of the race remains essentially the same. It consists of 21 stages, including a combination of mountain stages, individual time trials, and flat stages.
